Activating Our Authority

  • Activation
    • Authority = the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine.
    • Activate – definition = make (something) active or operative
      • A new credit/debit card must be activated before use
      • A new phone must be activated
      • To open/use someone’s phone or computer you must get their password
      • New software must be activated
      • The Louisiana driving manual states, “Headlights must be activated when visibility is limited.”
        • Authority must be activated
    • Luke 10:19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
      • Christians have been given authority to overcome, overrule, to crush, to rout “the enemy”
      • Serpent = “to gaze in amazement”, smoke & mirrors- the devil was a beautiful angel before falling – his tactics can be distractingly beautiful and amazing to entice us into sin
      • Scorpion = to pierce (stinger) to plant poison in our body and mind
        • Are there areas in your life that are being “harmed” injured?
        • Are there areas that are not productive or fruitful? Be wary of the snakes and scorpions
      • You can be godly and get bitten by a serpent (Paul was) or stung by a scorpion.  Depending on the new territories you roam it is possible, even for a Godly person.
        • The more you step out in faith and obedience to God, the more the devil will attack. The devil hates Godly leaders and pioneers and will try to do anything possible to stop or slow them down.
        • No one likes being attacked but if you are not willing to deal with the attacks that come with being a Christian and a leader, you will never be a great leader, or be a survivor or you may not even stay a Christian
    • The initial “passcode” = Jesus
      • Walk in the Salvation and power that Jesus has given us – Activate the authority that HE has given you
  • To Activate Our Authority – We must have the “key/pass-code”
    • Just as in dealing with high security documents/secrets in government there are various levels of security
      • A person must obtain each new level of security clearance to move to the different levels of authority
      • To walk in God’s Authority, we must qualify for those levels of security clearance
    • We can lose your security pass if you don’t follow protocol
      • We may not lose your Jesus/salvation “pass” by default but we can lose our higher levels of “authority pass” by sin or neglect
        • If I’m living in sin and I know it and then I try to rebuke the devil in some situation, don’t  you think he also knows it, and he will not listen?

  • Pass-code: Must Be Under Authority To Have Authority:
    • A Roman centurion (like a colonel today) came to ask Jesus to heal his servant, Jesus said, “I will go.” The centurion says Lord you don’t have to come to my house because I am not worthy of having You even coming to my house. Just speak the Word and my servant will be healed. This guy “understood” authority
    • Matthew 8:9  For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, HE was amazed and said to those following HIM, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
      • 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.
    • To activate authority, we must be under authority
      • This everyday principle is operating in the work place around the world
      • It must be in operation in the home
        • As Christians, when we were young children living at home, one reason God did not give us more authority is because we resisted the authority of our parents.  It operates for a Christian young person even though their parents may be unbelievers
      • On the job we don’t see God move in us with authority many times because we don’t submit to the authority of our boss
        • If we must be told several times to do something, we are not under authority, or we don’t take that person’s authority seriously
        • Many people think, “This job is not relevant to my life, I’m just here for the money right now.” No, it does matter to God.
        • Jesus said, “Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar…” If we can’t be trusted with Caesar’s authority, we can’t be trusted with God’s authority.
    • I love the story of Joseph (Genesis chapters 37-39) – was promoted by being under authority, hardworking and faithful – as a slave, as a prisoner in prison, and then under Pharaoh as 2nd in command

  • Pass-code: Know The Authority Given To You
    • Police officers, judges, store clerks, etc; can only move in the authority given to them
      • If they exceed that authority given them they could be fired or even be libel
      • We must know what authority we have been given and the boundaries of that authority
    • Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word about Christ.
      • Jesus was amazed at the lack of faith of His disciples at times
        • We must be teachable
        • We must be willing to take responsibility for our actions – for positive things to happen
        • Example: We expect God to prosper us but are we a good steward (not wasteful)?
          • I expect God to heal me – am I taking care of my body, His temple?
          • I’m believing God to heal my family member, but – am I willing to put in the time to pray for them and even more to serve them and be an example for them?
          • Habits are hard to break; am I pushing forward to break that thing in my life, am I accountable?
    • Matthew 16:19  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” NIV
      • I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” GNB
      • “And that’s not all. You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven.” MSG
        • We have been given vast authority – we must begin to walk in and learn the authority given to us
        • We must stop blaming God for not doing more for us – God gave us the authority
    • We’re not waiting on God, God is waiting on us

  • Pass-code: We Must Believe What The Word/The Bible Tells Us
    • Faith is an action, Faith is a verb, it requires activation
    • James says, “faith without works is dead”James 2:20 (NIV – “faith without deeds is useless”)
      • Faith is putting into action what we have learned, and know
    • Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to HIM must believe that HE exists and that HE rewards those who earnestly seek HIM.
      • Do you believe God is a rewarder?
        • Practice tithing and giving
      • You believe God is your friend?  Spend time with HIM, invest time in someone else
      • You believe God created time, use it wisely
      • You believe God will answer your prayers – spend more time in prayer and don’t get mad at God or someone else if the situation doesn’t change immediately

  • Review:
    • 4 Pass-codes
      • Pass-code: JESUS – salvation = submitting to God’s Plan
      • Pass-code: Must Be Under Authority To Have Authority
      • Pass-code: Know The Authority Given To You (The Word)
      • Pass-code: Believe What The Word Tells Us (Faith/Action)
        • All of us have work to do to activate the vast authority God has given to us
        • Our lives and the lives of others depend upon it
        • We can walk in great authority – It is already available
        • Repent – Be Thankful, Be Faithful, Activate Authority through obedience and faith actions
